S-100 Operational Readiness

Human Factors, BRM & Decision-Making in Next-Generation Digital Navigation

S-100 is not simply a new electronic chart standard. It represents a broader change in the way navigational information will be presented, combined and used on the bridge.

As S-101 Electronic Navigational Charts are progressively introduced alongside products such as S-102 Bathymetric Surface, S-104 Water Levels, S-111 Surface Currents and S-129 Under Keel Clearance Management, bridge teams will increasingly work in a more detailed and dynamic information environment.

The key operational issue is therefore not only how the new technology works, but how the navigator should use it.

How do we make better decisions when more information is available without increasing information overload, automation bias or over-reliance on the system?

This is the central question behind the development of the S-100 Operational Readiness training concept.

The emphasis is on understanding which information matters, when it matters, how it should be verified and how it should influence the navigational decision.

Training approach

Advanced professional development.

The programme is being structured for Masters, Chief Officers, Officers of the Watch, marine superintendents, navigation specialists and maritime instructors.

The proposed model combines classroom discussion, case studies, practical navigation exercises and simulator-based assessment. The framework follows the structured training philosophy commonly used in IMO Model Courses, including defined entry standards, learning objectives, instructor requirements, practical exercises and assessment criteria.
